Explanation of the knee joint
The knee joint is a joint made up of three bones called the patella, femur, and tibia (tibia). In this joint, there is an internal and an external meniscus. The kneecap (the kneecap) is a small, flat bone located in a groove in the front of the knee. The kneecap is attached to the femur and tibia by tendons. It allows us to raise our calves straight through our knees while sitting. During this movement, the patella moves up and down the femoral groove of the femur. The surface of both is covered with cartilage to facilitate movement between the patella and the groove.
Causes of osteoarthritis of the knee
Inflammation in the spine: it gradually leads to the erosion of the articular cartilage. It most commonly affects middle-aged and older people.
Rheumatoid arthritis: an inflammatory disease that causes damage to the articular cartilage. It can occur at any age and usually affects many joints.
Post-traumatic arthritis: Post-traumatic arthritis occurs after a knee injury. This type of arthritis is similar to osteoarthritis and meniscus and occurs after a ligament injury. The pain starts mildly at first and gets worse with increasing wear and tear. And swelling of the joint and its movements are limited. It may be difficult to bend or extend the knee. The pain increases with activity, climbing stairs, walking, or bending the knee. There is a feeling of locking up, weakness and sprain in the knee. Some patients show that the degree of pain is affected by changes in the weather.
Types of artificial knee joint
The goal of the artificial knee joint is to reconstruct the damaged joint surfaces with specially designed prostheses. For this purpose, the prosthesis consists of four main parts;
Femoral component: The articular surface of the femur is prepared and positioned.
Tibial component: The articular surface of the tibia is prepared and positioned.
The patella component: It is placed on the articular surface of the patella.
Insert: This piece is made of polyethylene and is the spacer that is placed between the tibial component and the femur
